Gatherings of Strangers: Why Museums Matter by Maria Balshaw
Rating: โ โโโโ
I picked up this book because I agree with the title. I think museums matter, and I also think they are a great place for strangers to gather.
Balshaw offers a thoughtful exploration of the evolving role of museums in contemporary society.ย
Drawing from her experience as the director of Tate, Balshaw explains how museums act as gathering spaces that foster connection, cultural understanding, and critical dialogue.ย
She touches on themes of inclusivity, accessibility, and the power of art to inspire collective reflection in a rapidly changing world.
The book is both personal and reflective, blending institutional insights with broader social and political commentary.ย
Unfortunately, as I read it, I was bored out of my mind.
It reads like a thesis, perhaps it was.ย
It is informative, albeit dry AF.

Ten years ago, a simple and frustrating mobile game called โFlappy Birdโ became wildly popular, with tens of millions of downloads.ย
However, its creator eventually pulled it from the market, claiming it was too harmful to keep online.
Now, a group of devoted fans from an organization called, The Flappy Bird Foundation is planning to bring the game back for Android and iOS next year.ย
They've even released a trailer teasing a new "epic adventure."
The new game will still feature the original Flappy Bird character. However, future updates will add new game modes, characters, and "massive multiplayer challenges."
